Commission for Glenrothes Distillery in Scotland, shown at Art Week Tokyo in November 2024.

The Glenrothes explores various tensions such as timelessness and progress, the natural and human, elemental and ephemeral, integrity and fragility. Through pursuing balance between such tensions, my sculpture celebrates groundedness coexisting alongside the ephemeral, which shines through in its materiality.

A bespoke sculptural bronze-cast frame overhangs a delicate ceramic plate encased in layers of wax. There are handmade candles nestled in the corners of the plate that melt over time. While wax has historically been used as a medium to preserve and protect, it is also a material that transforms given its context. I am interested in the way it creates freely formed layers on top of the plate, adding to a continuous narrative, mirroring the long withstanding legacy of the distillery.

The work hovers between creation and conservation through the interplay of the classical elements of fire, earth, water, and air. Akin to the Glenrothes harnessing of the elements, this work uses fire to transform its materiality. While the candle flame consumes the wax in part, it leaves residual wax that further conserves the ceramic stoneware painting, creating beautiful and unexpected traces. With this tension in mind, the work explores the relationship between the controlled and natural world which is an integral part to my artistic practice.

In the same way that The Glenrothes have created a sanctuary where the luxury of time can flourish both in the production and the enjoyment of their whisky, I want this work to reflect these values both in the material production and the experience of the final work during the Salon Reveal.
